Breeders’ Rewarded for Oaks, Derby Successes

Dolphus C. Morrison and Lamantia, Blackburn & Needham/Betz Thoroughbreds will be $100,000 richer as a result of the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby wins by Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird, respectively.

“It is especially exciting to see Kentucky bred win two of the premier races in the world,” said Lisa Underwood, executive director of KHRC. “To have Kentucky horses win both the Oaks and Derby is a real boost to our industry and to the people who work hard to continue this great racing tradition in Kentucky.”

Mine That Bird will take his chances in the Preakness Stakes in two weeks.

A spokesman confirmed the three-year-old gelding would compete in the second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown at Baltimore on May 16.

“I’ve never been to Baltimore, but it looks like I won’t be able to say that in a few days,” trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. said Monday.

Woolley said the horse will remain at Churchill Downs in Louisville at least until May 12 before shipping to Baltimore. He jogged a mile at Churchill on Monday morning and will have light jogs each of the next two days.

Woolley said there are no plans for the horse to have a full workout before the Preakness.

Kentucky-bred Mine That Bird, named Canada’s top two-year-old in 2008 when he raced at Woodbine in Toronto, was a huge upset winner in the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday afternoon.

The horse made an explosive run over the final two furlongs, racing down the rail to win after going off at 50-1 in the first leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown.

It was the second-biggest upset in Derby history, behind 1913’s Donerail, and it sent the Churchill Downs crowd — especially those who had bet on the Kentucky-bred gelding — into a frenzy.

Mine That Bird was almost unbeatable as a two-year-old at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack, winning four times in five races. But when he went to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last fall, Mine That Bird was a disappointing 12th.

The Preakness is limited to 14 starting horses.

Strengths: Shown the ability to stretch out in distance by winning 4 straight races in Canada as each distance increased. Extremely tactical and patient, he can sit a close-up second in :45 or :49, a wonderful and rare quality for a 2-year-old.

Weaknesses: Regionally tops at Woodbine. Average margin of victory in just over a length, so he has not put away the competition in short fields historically. Shocked the field at odds of 50-1 by winning the 135th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, 2009.

The Morning After: Basking in the Derby Glow
Mine That Bird | May 3, 2009 | 2:17 pm

On a cool, wet May 3 morning in the barn area of Churchill Downs, the owners and trainer of Mine That Bird were basking in the limelight while still trying to absorb what had transpired the previous day when the 3-year-old gelding posted a stunning 6 3/4-length victory over Pioneerof the Nile in the Kentucky Derby.

Borel, Mine That Bird Soar in Derby Shocker
Mine That Bird | May 2, 2009 | 6:19 pm

Jockey Calvin Borel scored a major upset May 2nd, 2009, in the Kentucky Derby riding Mine That Bird. Mine That Bird did not seem to mind the spotlight as he stood regally, ears up and looking off into the distance at cameras. The 50-1 upset winner of the Kentucky Derby trotted to the winner’s circle lazily.

Sometimes referred to mistakenly as Mind That Bird or Mine The Bird, Mind That Bird got his name from the Sire Birdstone, and the Mare Mining My Own. Some might argue that a better name might have suited the gentle gelding, but Mine That Bird doesn’t seem to raise any objections.
