Weather Outlook for Pimlico Raceway on the day of the Preakness Stakes
Mine That Bird | May 14, 2009 | 12:25 pm

Weather conditions are expected to be mixed clouds and sun for two days, with moderate temperatures reaching as high as 80 degrees on Saturday in Baltimore, MD.

The warmth should allow some of the moisture to drain from the track, putting conditions at fast – heavily favoring the powerhouse horses of Rachel Alexandra and Pioneer of the Nile. Starting from the second post line, Mine that Bird is not expected to have any advantage on the rail in regards to the speed of the inside track as far as wet/dry weather conditions.

Strengths: Shown the ability to stretch out in distance by winning 4 straight races in Canada as each distance increased. Extremely tactical and patient, he can sit a close-up second in :45 or :49, a wonderful and rare quality for a 2-year-old.

Weaknesses: Regionally tops at Woodbine. Average margin of victory in just over a length, so he has not put away the competition in short fields historically. Shocked the field at odds of 50-1 by winning the 135th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Borel, Mine That Bird Soar in Derby Shocker
Mine That Bird | May 2, 2009 | 6:19 pm

Jockey Calvin Borel scored a major upset May 2nd, 2009, in the Kentucky Derby riding Mine That Bird. Mine That Bird did not seem to mind the spotlight as he stood regally, ears up and looking off into the distance at cameras. The 50-1 upset winner of the Kentucky Derby trotted to the winner’s circle lazily.

Sometimes referred to mistakenly as Mind That Bird or Mine The Bird, Mind That Bird got his name from the Sire Birdstone, and the Mare Mining My Own. Some might argue that a better name might have suited the gentle gelding, but Mine That Bird doesn’t seem to raise any objections.
