Breeders’ Rewarded for Oaks, Derby Successes

Dolphus C. Morrison and Lamantia, Blackburn & Needham/Betz Thoroughbreds will be $100,000 richer as a result of the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby wins by Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird, respectively.

“It is especially exciting to see Kentucky bred win two of the premier races in the world,” said Lisa Underwood, executive director of KHRC. “To have Kentucky horses win both the Oaks and Derby is a real boost to our industry and to the people who work hard to continue this great racing tradition in Kentucky.”

On a cool, wet May 3 morning in the barn area of Churchill Downs, the owners and trainer of Mine That Bird were basking in the limelight while still trying to absorb what had transpired the previous day when the 3-year-old gelding posted a stunning 6 3/4-length victory over Pioneerof the Nile in the Kentucky Derby.

Total wagering from all sources on the 13-race Kentucky Derby card May 2 at Churchill Downs was $155,969,770, a decline of 5.3% from the $164,668,176 wagered a year earlier on 12 races, the track has reported.
